Biography Raised by a liberal hippie single mother in a strange conservative community in the epicenter of the Pennsylvania Dutch region, my work is a product of religious harassment and general republican insanity. I learned to keep my mouth sealed in an environment where feminism was a naughty word, the world was sure to end tomorrow, and Democrats were creatures of night searching for unsuspecting fetuses to abort. Suffice it to say I quickly removed myself from said community and joined the rest of the deviants in New York City where I graduated from Pratt Institute in 1998. As an agnostic, I am still drawn to dark religious themes, things with faces as well as fur, and the world of dreams and the subconscious. I am strongly influenced by craftsmen and enjoy the irony of creating work that looks like it could be in your grandmother's kitchen if it hadn't made a turn toward the perverted. I am also influenced by the work of Aubrey Beardsley and Alfred Kubin and the Symbolism movement in the second half of the 19th century, yet I believe art should be self explanatory as over-analyzation can injure the magic created by a piece. Japanese anime/comic books and science fiction are yet another source from which my visual sentiments are stimulated. The techniques I use are largely self developed, incorporating homemade play dough, paper mache, and found objects. I am most excited when I can use one organic item to replace another and have the viewers not recognize the original source. I have worked in the art department of New York Magazine, taught art K-12, and have worked as an illustrator and fine artist since 1998. |
